So, I’ve never blogged about anything before and it would appear that I have finally given in to peer pressure because, well, here I am writing a blog. When I was trying to decide what to blog about, I had to figure out what I love that most people can relate to. I love to play golf but somehow only one of my friends plays it and even he doesn’t play very often. I love to play video games but that’s not something that really holds a common thread with many people my age. There is one thing, though, everyone can agree on. One of the few things in life that can be artsy and edible all in the same sentence. That’s right folks, I’m talking about food….all of it.
I have always had a passion for food. When I was a little kid, I used to make little pizzas out of leftover biscuit dough that my Grandma , whom I affectionately refer to as Nannie, and whatever random ingredients I could put on it that made sense to a 4 year old. It was clear to everyone at that point in my life that I like to experiment with food and see what happens. It doesn’t always turn out the way I would like, though.
I remember when I was 14 years old, I decided I wanted to try and make alfredo sauce for the first time. It started off well enough, I started with a basic roux ( equal parts butter and flour all mixed up and melted), then I added some milk and PRESTO! I had my first bechemel [BAY-SHA-MELL] sauce. This was a proud moment for me as I had just created one of the Five Mother Sauces used in French cuisine. Add a few more ingredients, pepper and parmesan cheese, and it became alfredo sauce. For most people, this would have been good enough. Just add some pasta and we’re ready to eat. Well apparently, I’m not most people. As my fiance will tell you, I like to tinker with things. This is where it went south….quickly. I decided I wanted to add something to it, some sort of meat. Chicken comes to mind first with alfredo, but I didn’t have any available. I did have, however, some leftover grilled salmon. Bad idea.
Beginner Tip #1: Salmon is a quick and easy way to utterly ruin an alfredo sauce.
Well that’s enough about me for now. In future entries I’m going to share more of my journey through the world of food. Stay tuned for restaurant reviews, food stories and of course some yummy recipes of my own.
Until next time, Guten Appetit!
I like this! Keep writing about food!
ReplyDeleteI blame you for my love of food and the reason I can't go anywhere without trying the best thing on the menu.
And I distinctly remember that alfredo incident. Gross.
